Short Finned Pilot Whales

Short Finned Pilot Whales are the second largest member of the Dolphin family, the largest being the Orca, and are resident to waters off Tenerife. This is due to the fact that the underwater geography between the island of Tenerife and La Gomera boasts an average depth of 1500m and a maximum depth of 2400m creating the perfect environment for the Pilot Whales food, Giant Squid. It is primarily the larger males that do the hunting and on a 20 minute dive, they can dive down to 1,000m in search of their Cephalopod prey.
